On the last working day of 2025, I was at a client’s server room in Shunyi doing the year-end inspection, and while I was there I exported the incident records for the fourth quarter and ran a quick tally. This medical device manufacturer has an IT team of just two people, and more than 60% of the tickets they handled all year were repeat issues: printer drivers, expired domain accounts, switch ports that went down and came back up. These things consume a huge amount of time, while the system architecture problems that actually require real thinking get pushed back until they turn into hidden risks.

I later showed this data to the client, and his first reaction was: can we make some of this nonsense go away? At that point I hadn’t yet read Gartner’s newly released Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2026, but my gut already told me the answer was probably in that stack of reports. After reading it, I became even more convinced that AI-native operations is not just a concept. It is stepping out of the PowerPoint decks of large enterprises and becoming something small and mid-sized businesses can actually touch and use.

What Gartner Means by “Agentic AI”, and How the Ops World Sees It

In Gartner’s 2026 trends report, Agentic AI ranks first, and the logic behind it is straightforward: AI no longer just answers questions; it can plan autonomously, call tools, and close the loop on a task. Applied to operations, this means alerts from monitoring systems are no longer “beep beep, you have an alert”. Instead, AI decides directly whether the alert needs handling, how to handle it, and whether a human needs to be notified.

This is not far-fetched. Earlier this year, when we helped a printing factory in Tongzhou with IT planning, their existing Zabbix was generating hundreds of alerts a day. The operations staff had long since become numb to them, and the alerts that really mattered were drowned out. We deployed an alert platform with AI preprocessing for them, and the logic is simple: once an alert comes in, it first goes through noise filtering, correlation analysis, and impact assessment. More than 80% of junk alerts are merged or silenced before they ever reach the operations staff, and only the rest are pushed through by priority. It was a small change, but the on-call engineers’ fatigue dropped visibly.

The IT Struggle for SMBs Isn’t a Lack of Tools, It’s a Lack of Closed Loops

Having done IT outsourcing in Beijing for more than a decade, I’ve seen the IT reality of too many SMB clients: the servers were bought five years ago, the systems were deployed three years ago, and operations means “call the integrator when something breaks”. It’s not that this model doesn’t work at all, but it’s getting harder and harder to keep up with today’s pace.

Take network failures. Under the traditional model, a leased line goes down, the carrier notifies the client, the client notifies the operations team, the operations team goes on site to investigate, discovers that a fiber pigtail was chewed by a rat, calls to schedule a construction crew, and waits for the fiber splice to be completed. By then the business has already been down for four hours. Every step in this chain is waiting, and every step adds cost.

The core change AI-native operations brings is this: let the tools run themselves. The intelligent network monitoring platform we deploy for clients (part of our Network Equipment Package) can do things like probe line quality in real time, automatically trigger a backup link, issue warnings 30 minutes before a failure occurs, and, most importantly, record the entire fault-handling process as a structured ticket that later supports root cause analysis. This doesn’t replace people; it reserves human judgment for the steps that truly need judgment.

1. Alert noise reduction: daily alert volume drops from 500 to under 80, an 84% reduction in noise
2. Fault localization: average MTTR shortened from 3.2 hours to 45 minutes, a 76% efficiency gain
3. Prevention: warnings issued 48 hours in advance for predicted disk failures and degrading link quality

The Path to Adoption: SMBs Don’t Need a Major Overhaul

Many SMB owners, when they hear “AI operations”, react first with: at our scale, can we afford it? That concern is not unreasonable. After all, when intelligent operations was being hyped a few years ago, it really did require enterprises to have enough data accumulated and a technical team in place. But things are different now.

The Gartner report mentions a trend called “Small Data”, meaning that in a specific domain you don’t need ultra-large-scale data training; small samples in a vertical scenario are actually more accurate. This matches our experience in IT Operations Outsourcing exactly. You don’t need to train a generalist AI; you just need to train an “operations assistant” for this company’s specific business characteristics.

Here’s an example. A lab equipment manufacturer in Changping has an IT system that isn’t really complex: an ERP server, a number of industrial PCs, and one internet leased line. But their pain point is very specific: the equipment occasionally needs remote debugging, and when network quality is poor during debugging, the engineer is left waiting helplessly on the customer’s site. The solution we built for them layers quality monitoring on top of the existing network, probes the response time of each business application in real time, automatically selects the optimal path, and keeps a record and rollback capability for every configuration change. From assessment to go-live took less than two weeks, at one third the cost of a traditional solution, and it solved their most critical problem.

The key point is this: adopting AI-native operations doesn’t require tearing everything down and starting over. When we did IT planning for a manufacturer in Shunyi, they already had a certain IT foundation, and our job was to “grow” intelligent capabilities on top of the existing architecture rather than demolish and rebuild everything. This kind of incremental transformation carries lower risk and wins higher buy-in from the business.

Another practical issue: data security. SMBs generally worry about business data being uploaded to the cloud for processing, and that concern is reasonable. Our approach is to prioritize local deployment, with the AI analysis engine running on the client’s own servers; only de-identified statistical metrics are sent back to the operations platform for trend analysis. This preserves the ability to do intelligent analysis while avoiding the risk of data leakage.

Back to People: Whose Value Does AI Amplify?

After all this talk about technology, I want to finish by talking about people.

I’ve worked in IT operations for over a decade, and my biggest takeaway is this: the most valuable person in this field isn’t the one with the strongest technical skills, but the one with the richest experience. A ten-year veteran can glance at a log and know roughly where the problem is, while a newcomer might dig through documentation for two hours and still be lost. But the problem is that experience can’t be copied. When a senior engineer leaves, the experience leaves with them.

AI-native operations is changing that. Once AI takes over the repetitive work, the focus of operations engineers shifts: from “handling failures” to “preventing failures”, from “responding to alerts” to “optimizing architecture”. This is really a return to the value of operations work. No longer a firefighting crew scrambling from one emergency to the next, but the planners who keep the business running steadily.

For SMBs, this means that even with an IT team of only two or three people, they can achieve what used to take a team of ten. AI doesn’t replace people; it amplifies their experience. When we deliver our Network Equipment Package, we connect AI monitoring capabilities with the operations team’s daily workflows, so the tools truly serve people instead of becoming yet another system that needs maintaining.

Back to the medical device factory client from the beginning of this article. After reading the alert analysis report I prepared for them, he asked a very direct question: is this stuff expensive? I said it depends on what you want to solve. If you just want to reduce the fatigue of on-call engineers, an intelligent alert platform plus our remote monitoring service is enough. If you want to truly turn IT operations into a business-support capability, that takes a longer-term plan. He thought about it and said, let’s start with step one.

That answer is very pragmatic. AI-native operations is not an all-or-nothing choice; it’s more like a staircase. Every company can start from its own most painful point and move up step by step. Gartner’s trends report reads as grand in scope, but when it lands on concrete enterprise IT management, it’s really just these specific problems: too many alerts, fault localization too slow, prevention too weak. Once the problem is clear, the answer isn’t far away.
