How to Manage IT for Chain Stores and Multi-Branch Businesses: Multi-Site Networking, Monitoring, and Operations Choices (2026)

First, a word on who we are: we are Beijing Siwen Lide, based in Shunyi, and for 14 years we have provided IT operations outsourcing and enterprise networking for small and medium-sized businesses. This article is about how chain stores and multi-branch enterprises should manage their IT; whoever you end up working with, you can use it as a reference.

Once a company opens its third site, its IT headaches double. Not because there is more equipment, but because every site grows in its own way: each store arranges its own broadband, each watches its own surveillance, point-of-sale and office systems share one network, and headquarters has to call around one by one to check on anything.

Multi-Site vs. Single-Site: Five Key Differences

Item	At a single site	At three or more sites
Network	One broadband line, one router	One line per site, with interconnectivity, unified management, and the ability to tell which site has gone down
Business systems	Systems installed locally	One system at headquarters that every site must access, without exposing it to the public internet
Surveillance	Viewable in-store	Headquarters needs centralized viewing, playback, and search by time range
POS and business terminals	On the same network as office computers	Isolation is recommended, so one infected device does not take down the whole store
Faults	The owner calls someone directly	Who the store manager reports to, how long until someone arrives, and how headquarters finds out all need a defined process

Three Approaches to Multi-Site Interconnectivity

Approach	How it works	Who it suits
Standard broadband + encrypted interconnect	Each site uses standard broadband, with encrypted tunnels between devices for interconnectivity	Most small and mid-sized chains. The lowest cost, and sufficient when the data exchanged between headquarters and stores is orders, inventory, attendance records, and similar
Dedicated line	A point-to-point line ordered from a carrier; we handle the application and coordination	Companies with high latency and stability requirements, or compliance obligations. The cost is several times that of the previous option
Systems in the cloud	Business systems hosted in the cloud and accessed directly by each site	Companies whose systems support cloud deployment. Pay attention to access control, and do not leave the system open to the entire internet

The three can be combined: flagship stores on encrypted interconnect, newly opened temporary sites connected over standard broadband first, and core systems in the cloud. The key is not which one you choose, but that someone manages it all centrally and that you know who to call when something goes wrong.

The Five Pitfalls We See Most Often

Each store arranges its own broadband. It is quick to set up, but later the bills are scattered, renewal dates differ, and when something breaks there is no single person to call.
Surveillance stays in-store only. When something happens, you go to the store to copy the footage and often find the drive has long been full, or has failed without anyone knowing.
POS and office on one network. If an employee’s computer is infected, the POS system goes down with it. Isolating these two types of devices costs very little.
No standard checklist for a new store. Every store’s equipment, cabling, and passwords are different, so whoever takes over has to figure it all out from scratch.
Business systems exposed directly to the public internet. To let stores access the system, its ports are mapped straight out. This is the most common source of risk.

The Standard IT Checklist for Opening a New Site

Connectivity: apply two to four weeks in advance; for a new building, first confirm whether the carrier’s line has been brought into the building.
Cabling and wireless: design according to floor area and device locations, keeping POS, office, and guest networks separate.
Network equipment: firewall or enterprise router, switches, and wireless APs, with models standardized across headquarters and sites.
Connecting to headquarters: configure from a unified template, and do not let every site do its own thing.
Surveillance: camera layout, retention days, and whether headquarters can view everything centrally, all decided before work begins.
Handover: the equipment list, passwords, and topology diagram go to headquarters, not just onto the installer’s phone.

What We Do, and What We Are Not a Fit For

Multi-site networking: encrypted interconnectivity between headquarters, stores, and warehouses, with a unified configuration template; new sites go live from the template.
Network equipment package: firewalls, routers, switches, and wireless APs provided and under warranty for the contract term, with standardized models at every site.
Remote access: sTrust, our in-house zero trust remote access solution. Business systems are not exposed to the public internet, access is granted per person, and it is disabled the day someone leaves.
Low-voltage and surveillance: cabling, camera layout design, and centralized viewing, handled by the same team that does ongoing operations.
Day-to-day operations: a single reporting channel for all sites, remote support first with on-site visits as a fallback, and no limit on the number of tickets.

Dozens to hundreds of stores spread across provinces—you need a nationwide provider with a local presence in every region.
Implementation and maintenance of the POS and membership systems themselves—that is for the software vendor; we handle the network, isolation, and backups.
A permanent on-site person at every store—we work remote-first with on-site visits, not resident staffing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Three sites, 60 people in total — roughly how much per month?
A: Based on headcount, you fall into our all-inclusive tier, from RMB 6,999/month, covering network equipment, backup, and remote access at every site; one-time cabling and monitoring are quoted separately per site.(Reference as of September 2026, not a quotation commitment. What each tier includes is documented on our official website.)

Q: If a store loses its network connection, who should the store manager call?
A: One point of contact is enough. Line issues we take up with the carrier ourselves, equipment issues we replace ourselves, and when it is unclear which category it falls into, that should not be left to the store manager to work out.

Q: Several stores already have their own setups in place. Can they still be unified?
A: Yes. We start with an on-site audit to map out the lines, equipment, and credentials at each site, then retrofit them one by one to a unified template, so there is no need to shut everything down and redo it all at once.
