In earlier posts we covered GEO methods, winning customers through your website, and how to get pages indexed. The question that came up most in the comments was: “I understand the reasoning — but how exactly should the article be written?” Everyone publishes articles, so why do some rank near the top on Baidu and get picked up by AI as answers, while others sink without a trace? The difference usually isn’t writing skill — it’s whether the piece is “answer-type content”. Today we’ll dig into the most practical part of all: what answer-type content actually looks like, and how to write it step by step.
First, understand what search engines and AI actually want
When users search or ask an AI, they are essentially looking for an answer to a specific question. So what search engines and AI want most is content that answers a question directly and clearly. The more your article reads like “a good answer,” the more likely it is to rank high and be cited by AI. Conversely, an advertorial that spends the whole page praising itself — “we are strong, we are trustworthy” — answers no one’s question, so naturally no one wants it.
Step 1: Make the title the exact question users would ask
Answer-type content starts with the title. Skip the vague phrasing and use the exact words a user would type into Baidu or ask an AI as your title. A quick comparison makes it clear:
| ? Self-indulgent title | ? Answer-type title |
|---|---|
| Professional tax expertise you can trust | How much does bookkeeping and tax filing cost a small company per year? |
| Craftsmanship and quality you can rely on | How do you choose an injection molding factory? Ask these 5 questions first |
| Our zero trust solution | What’s the difference between zero trust and VPN? Should small and medium businesses adopt it? |
Answer-type titles share a few traits: they are questions, they contain specific business terms, and they speak to the user’s real confusion. With a title like that, search engines know who to rank you for, and AI knows which question you can answer.
Step 2: Give the conclusion up front — don’t circle around it
Many people like to build up layer by layer and only get to the point at the end. But AI extracting an answer and users scanning a page both look at the beginning first. So answer-type content should “give the conclusion first, then explain why” — state the core answer in the first sentence or two, then expand on the details. If you bury the most useful line in the eighth paragraph, AI probably won’t find it, and users will have scrolled away long before.
Step 3: Keep the structure clear so both people and AI can scan it
- Use questions or scenarios in subheadings too: “How much does it cost,” “How to choose,” “What to watch out for” — readers know at a glance what the section answers.
- Use lists, tables, and steps generously: AI especially loves citing structured content; “5 steps” or “a comparison of 3 scenarios” is far easier to extract than a wall of text.
- One point per paragraph: keep paragraphs short and cover one idea thoroughly; it reads easily and parses easily for machines.
- Bold the key information: mark up conclusions, figures, and key points so scanners catch them at a glance.
Step 4: Make the content substantive — no empty talk
AI and search engines are getting better at telling whether there’s real substance. Take “how to choose a server”: saying only “choose according to your needs” says nothing; but “how to choose based on how many users, what applications, and what budget — with specific tiers and figures” is a real answer. Concrete numbers, steps, comparisons, and real cases are what make answer-type content valuable. Honestly writing down what you know best and what customers ask most often is the best content there is.
Step 5: End with an FAQ — two birds with one stone
Adding a few “common question + short answer” pairs at the end of the article is a bonus for answer-type content: first, it resolves the smaller questions users care about, and second, this question-and-answer format is exactly what AI likes to quote directly. List the questions customers keep asking during consultations — it’s thoughtful and makes your content easier for AI to adopt.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I’m not a writer — what if my writing isn’t good?
A: Answer-type content doesn’t need fine writing; it needs “explaining the question clearly.” Plain language, written the way you’d answer a customer face to face, is enough — clarity and usefulness matter far more than polish.
Q: How long should an article be?
A: There’s no hard rule — just answer one question thoroughly. Usually 1,000–2,000 Chinese characters works well. Don’t pad it to hit a word count; substance matters more than length.
Q: Can I publish on other platforms instead of my own website?
A: Walking on both legs is best. Publishing on your own site builds your SEO/GEO assets; cross-posting to WeChat Official Accounts, Zhihu, and similar platforms expands your reach and increases the chances of being cited by AI. Distributing the same piece across platforms is excellent value for effort.
Q: How often should I publish?
A: Consistency is what counts. One or two articles a week beats forcing out one long piece a month. Search engines and AI both favor sites that update steadily.
